Humming a tune - Page 2 Empty Re: Humming a tune

Mon Sep 23, 2019 1:48 pm
Noboru Kaito walked into the open fields in the land of rivers, teeth gripped loosely a rice bun he had bought earlier. In his left hand he gripped the fishing pole he had purchased earlier, deftly held in spite of its length and swing. "As though it is a spear", the genin though. On his other hand, two buckets swayed against each other, one with ice and a cold beer, the other, a smaller bucket, with fresh red worms and nightcrawlers; he almost feared the beer would tale the earthy smell of the bait, and more precariously still, held by the tips of his fingers, a folding bench he had borrowed from the club.

As he walked the green plain, a deep sense of calm washed over him. It was extremely unusual for the redhead to feel so peaceful, so much so that he almost became paranoid something terrible would happen soon. "Easy, Kaito… it's just competitive fishing." No one ever heard of how fierce competitive could get though. It was a cutgill world out here.

As he approached the edge of the lake, he could barely look at it directly such was the brightness from the sun's reflection. "Hopefully it'll get better when I'm in front of it." It would indeed; as he approached the angle with the sun got better and the surface of the lake no longer tried to blind the ninja, and he could see a couple of lads by the water. He looked around; there were plenty of people along the shores, most hanging out and having a joyful time, so he figured he might as well join this new group, as it was the closest. As he approached, a commotion by the water told him one of the was having luck already, and he pulled a beautiful specimen put of the water. "Lucky lad", he thought.

"Mind if I join you?" He asked to nobody in particular, and not too loudly so as to not scare potential fish away. One of the lads sat on a very peculiar log, the other in the river bank. Kaito struck the bottom of the pole into the muddy bank of the lake, put down the two buckets one at a time, carefully, and unfolded the bench near the two other lads. Were they ninja too, like the owner of the place? Neither of them looked very ninja-like. He himself had only his flannel shirt and baggy shorts, no headband in sight but stowed away instead beneath his shirt, above the belt, in case he needed to represent the Hidden Cloud in a pinch.

He looked to the clear skies. "Should be a nice day today", he quipped to his new buddies as he punched a redworm into the edge of the hook. He swung the pole masterfully, the fishing line being pulled by the weight to the hook, before plopping into the water. He was not a man of luck, he was a man of action, but fishing was a different kind of game. It wasn't the same as running a kitchen or preparing a meal, it wasn't the same as fighting someone intent on killing you and trying to sink a blade into their gut before they sunk one into yours. Fishing was a game of patience, and luck. He let out another silent prayer, waiting for a bite.

Humming a tune - Page 2 Empty Re: Humming a tune

Mon Sep 23, 2019 2:24 pm
“You know, I’ve been to Haven.  Just to the main city though.  Never did get around in the country.”  Maku would say calmly.  He would have gestures towards Eliwood when he mentioned trying his own luck.  Taking up a position next to him, he’d recast his own watching the bobber hit the water.  His own rod he’d taken from the more eccentric sections of the small bait shop.  It was jet black, but with a shining red reel.  The grip had striating of red, black, and white as well.  He’d thought about carving a cloud into it, but then thought better, though he hadn’t been able to resist at least the matching colors.

“I’m a bit of a musician myself ya know.  When I’m not in the kitchen.”  Maku would say after taking a drink from the glass bottle.  Laying back in the sand he reached up and grabbed a smaller cooler next to the rocking one that held his prized fish.  Pulling it towards them he’d open it, showing off what was inside.  “If you’re hungry I don’t mind sharing a meal......I’m helping with the lunch and dinner tonight so wanted to fit some fishin in first.  They are doing karaoke one of the nights, maybe you can play and I can sing!”  He’d beam clearly proud of his work, allowing Eliwood to take what he wanted, and even giving a tinkling  laugh at the pair playing together.

Inside was an assortment of drinks, alcohols and sodas, as well as a couple plastic wrapped meals.  Sandwiches, rolls, and even a couple instances of sashimi.  Maku even saw fit to pull on of the sandwiches out and take a couple bites from it himself.  “You can call me Taki, originally from Takigakure so shouldn’t be hard to remember.”  He’d say in-between bites.  Using his foot he’d ever so often pull on the rod causing the bobber to hop up and down with a bloop.  “You from Haven?”  He’d ask casually.  He’d use such a simple question to measure the lad.  In this world of secrets and lies asking where someone was from was sometimes too personal a question.  It was possible he wouldn’t get a truthful answer, but he’d just have to wait and see.

The boy didn’t look like a Shinobi, but appearances could be deceiving.  His guard was slightly up, but overall between the calm lake and the beers he’d been partaking in, he found himself a little less cautious than normal.  He might be an S rank wanted nin, but with hair different, a beard, not using the Sharingan and chakra suppressed to a genin level, he hoped that such a thing was hidden well enough.  “What brings you to the tournament?  Besides the beautiful weather, and maybe the girls...”. He’d as giving his fishing friend a wink as a boat skirted by propelled by some kind of wind jutsu, several bikini clad girls laughing and waving to the pair as it did so.  Maku watched them go, clearly more interested in those fish of the sea than the ones in the lake.

Just as thoughts of pretty girls and bikini’s dances across his mind they were joined by another.  “Aye, is day pretty beautiful...” Maku would say his eyes still watching the boat go by.  Giving his head a shake he’d look at the new comer as he cast his own pole and took up near them.  “We were just discussing were we are from.  Taki is the name, help yourself friend.”  He’d day introducing himself again, and pointing towards the cooler he’d offered Eliwood a moment before.

Humming a tune - Page 2 Empty Re: Humming a tune

Clearly the trick of fishing was to not pay attention and enjoy either a nap or a beer Maku would think. Just as he had finished introducing himself again and offering the newcomer some refreshments, the pole gripped between his toes yanked. Standing up once more he put up a fight against another Denizen of the deep.

A couple Swift cranks in the pole, and much less work saw another fish quickly break the crystals waters. Holding it up via the line he’d inspect it, though it was a bit of a let down after the last one.

“Well they can’t all be winners boys.” He’d say looking his scaly friend up and down. It was an ugly brown color, and its fens almost looked like leaves or algae to help it blend in near the shore. Gripping it, he’d pull out the hook, “sure is an ugly one.” He’d say before giving a sharp whistle.

At the whistle a skunk lunges out of the small bit of trees that had surrounded his original sitting location. The skunk waddled straight to Maku, though it possibly could cause alarm to his two new friends. It wasn’t every day you found a skunk this close, and even then only on bad ones. If they showed any concern he’d laugh, “no need to worry, she won’t spray you unless you start beatin me!” He’d say with a laugh. Kneeling he’d pay Tricky on her head before tossing the fish into the sand, where the skunk promptly made a meal for herself with it. “Was rude of me not to offer food to the lady, had to rectify. This here is my pet Tricky.”

Rebaiting his hook, he’d cast out as far as he could get it, and then resume his relaxed position. Patting Tricky on her back as she tore into the fish. “Now where were y’all from?”

Humming a tune - Page 2 Empty Re: Humming a tune

Mon Sep 23, 2019 6:17 pm
Eliwoods line tugged as if he had caught a fish but in truth he had simply snagged a rock. When he yanked the rod the line swiftly snapped. He had gotten a little enthusiastic. His rod was quite cheap but it still had character. The metal was cheap and the paint was a tacky yellow and blue mixture with white streaks throughout. The handle had nothing in the way of a grip of any kind. The pole simply extended up from beginning to end.

"Ooh. I guess you really do get what you have paid for." He laughed as he reeled in what was left of his line. His new acquaintance now had a name attached to his face, and also seemed like a kind soul. Taki offered food he had made himself to Eliwood, an offer he would not decline. The monk would have a look at the wide assortment and marvel at the work that must have went into all of it. He reached in and took out a roll, thanking his friend as he did.

"Why yes I am from Haven. Although not the City. I hail from a Monastery on the edge of the country." He would gladly share his personal details as his mind was not at all on whether the person he was talking to was dangerous. He was no ninja and so he knew very little of what dangers might lurk in the world. So far he had only learned a single technique and he used it for survival during his travels.

"I must thank you again kind Taki. This food is marvelous." As he spoke he reattached a hook to the end of his line and looked for some bait. As he looked a new stranger had shown up and begun to fish alongside them. He found a worm in the ground and hooked it.

"Hello, nice to meet you. I am Eliwood. It is indeed a fine day. Nature has gifted us a good one." He would cast his line and extend a hand for this new stranger to shake if so inclined. Both of his new friends seemed to be enjoying alcohol and so he too grabbed a bottle from Taki and had a sip. The monks used to let him have a cup of sake with them during rituals but he was never a fan of the way it made him feel. The wind that always followed the monk since the day of his birth was sickening to him when drunk.

Taki was having immense luck with the fish. Catching two odd looking fish with seeming ease. This time Eliwood could feel it. He would certainly catch a big one this time. He began to hum a tune the monks once told him was a song to bring good fortune. While he was chatting with the two around him his bobber sank under the surface. Could this be a fish for real this time? There was only one way to find out.
