Dunes and Divas (Mizuki)

The blistering heat of the desert was difficult to deal with for outsiders. Not having grown up in the desert, the temperature swings between day and night was just the top of the problems in the problem pile of the lithe Uchiha sitting cross legged in the small tent. In front of her, the gracious elder that agreed to take her in prepared a tea meant to cool them down and handle the heat a little better. Many times he saw this technique so far in the desert; the tea leaves would be cooked several times with an initial cooked water kept to the side for flavor, later on this water would be added to the boiled tea which would be served into a glass with spearmint leaves and lemon shavings, filtered several times back into the pot to enhance the flavor, before finally being tasted for sugarness and served to the guest. Hayami thanked the elder and brought the hot tea to her lips, and drank half of the glass in spite of the heat. Immediately the hot mint and lemon played with her senses, bringing a sensation of freshness to her every breath which she mixed by breathing through her mouth and exhaling through her nose, the heat not so much of an issue anymore.

The elder escorted her outside the tent, and she pecked him a kiss on the cheek as a thank you for the tea he served and the tea he gave her in the canteen to assist dealing with the desert ahead. Bravely, Hayami made her way through the desert, looking for the fabled group of rogue ninja. "Maybe I'll be able to pursue my nightmares once again.

“This heat is no joke”, Mizuki mumbled to herself, her feet now dragging the sand leaving deep lines following her path. Her black hair seemed to soak in the heat like a magnet and she swore she could feel herself baking in its light. She walked a few more paces before stopping, all motivation falling from her and flopping onto the sand, her back hitting it with a dull thump. So is this it? She thought to herself, wondering if she was ever going to reach any civilization again. She had been so arrogant when she set out she didn’t even bother bringing enough provisions to last her more than a day or two. She laughed aloud at herself, Oh Mizuki, you sadistic idiot, you did this on purpose. In her past she had been known for pushing herself to breaking points most people would flinch at even thinking about. This was just another one of her self administered tests she would find herself in : How long before you die in a desert or get out lucky?

The sun beat down more miserably on her as she covered her face with her arms, a couple more minutes break and she would be up again, trudging along again. Though before her allotted break would pass she would sense an approaching person. At first it was a feeling she could brush away but as time passed she would notice it was definitely footsteps approaching from the east. She sat bolt upright, had her luck changed… and in what way? As she stared off into the shimmering distance a figure in a long flowing outfit breached the horizon and she smiled wickedly. “Wonder who came to play…?”

Normally, an oasis would be a pleasant sight to behold. Palm trees, water, dates: the works. More often than not, it was just a hallucination brought about by lack of water and insulation from the sun beating on one's head. Hayami was fairly certain she was not dehydrated, for she had a canteen with tea, nor insulated, for she had a hood protecting her bluish dark hair. And yet, someone in the dune, completely at random, sat up and eyed her in the distance. Hayami took the canteen into her hands and took a careful sip, chewing the water a couple of times to spread the humidity across her entire mouth to refresh and hydrate her gums before swallowing and breathing the spearmint freshness that kept her limber in such heat.

She approached cautiously and asked "are you ok, lass?", and while she tried to sound uninterested, she was playing coy. No one dressed like that could have survived for long without being a ninja, and she doubted any sane ninja travelled these parts. She was like her.

A missing ninja. A ninja no one would miss if they went… Well, if they went missing, for good.
