This week had been particularly rough for Masume. The rain and storms seemed only to end long enough for her to catch her breath, yet a lot of her supplies had been compromised. She had waited days for the terrible barrage of storms to cease and finally they did, but the sky remained overcast and the weather remained windy, but at least the rain and hail had come to a halt, if only for a moment. Still, the nearest stop for supplies was at least an hour's walk away.

Masume took her time, watching the birds and trees as she followed the dirt trail to the small settlement, breathing the cool and chilled air and getting lost in her thoughts.

It wasn't long before Masume arrived at what seemed to be a ghost town. The houses were discheveled and in tough condition and there was nobody in sight. As she approached the shops, she noticed broken glass and an absence of light. The sigh on the door was flipped to the "Closed" side.

As Masume peeked her head in the broken window to see if there was anyone taking shelter a voice came from behind her, scolding her and threatening her with trespassing on the property.

As she pulled away, from the window to face the middle-aged man, an awkward silence hung in the air, and finally he heaved a great sigh. His house had been ravaged by hail as had the other houses, however his house was much older and hand-built by his great grandparents, wheras the others were more commercially built by professionals and had no serious issues for the moment. He remarked how it wasn't fair, and how the town didn't have enough lumber for the immediate repair of his roof and with more storms on the way, everyone was still hunkered down. Nobody would be going out to log or to help repair.

Suddenly the man had an idea. He called Masume a strong, youthful lady, much stronger than him, anyway, and asked if she'd be interested in a deal. A homecooked meal from his wife and a warm night in their house as well as a paltry sum of ryo for a quick and repair of his roof, so that he at least stood a chance against the upcoming onslaught of weather. Even though she told him she didn't have much experience with roofing, he pleaded with her stating that she was his only hope.

Masume hesitantly accepted and immediately got to work. Someone had to help him. She started by borrowing an axe and a saw to go cut some trees. Of course hauling the logs took several trips after being cut into 100 kg sections and then split into planks at the building site.

The middle-aged man supervised and helped with measuring and menial tasks, however all the heavy lifting and climbing and strength-work fell on Masume's shoulders. And as she continued laying the beams based on his instruction, following every detail to the T.

It was hard work that left Masume covered in sweat and condensation from the humidity.

There were small showers here and there of rain, however, the real storm was yet to come.

After finishing, Masume was treated to some home-cooked ramen and fried river-fish. As she settled in to the guest bedroom n the attic, the winds picked up and the storm wreaked havoc, though she was there to repair anything if needed. Luckily, the repairs held up through the storm. They were good enough to buy the time the man needed to get a professional repairman out.

Without further ado, Masume was paid a fair bit and sent on her way, having made a new aquaintence in the Land of Fire.
