Mission:

Yomiko sighed as she trudged up to the front door of a rather cute and quaint little home. She hadn’t been in this part of town since her grandmother was alive when she was a little girl. Why? Because it was an area of town full of small single homes for older individuals, much like a retirement community. Normally she would think that was great. Normally she wouldn’t mind coming to do something for the elderly. Normally a mission to do something for the elderly, say take care of them as an example, would at least make her feel good about herself. This mission however? It was simply to go get the groceries off of a list that an old woman had written down for her.

It’s okay Yomiko, just do it quickly so you can be done with it and have a ‘mission complete’ tacked onto your file.

Plastering a sickly sweet smile onto her face, she knocked on the door with three small knocks. The older woman in question answered the door with a rather flat expression and a piece of paper already in her hand. Before Yomiko could even introduce herself or even make any small talk, the older woman reached forward, took one of Yomiko’s hands into hers, and shoved the piece of paper containing the list of groceries into it. Without so much as a word, she ushered Yomiko from her door frame and to the edge of her porch before skittering back inside and shutting the door post haste.

“Okay, well, that was weird. Maybe she has agoraphobia or something…”

Looking down at the list, she noted that it was a pretty simple list. If she had to guess, the old woman was likely baking some sort of cake. Shoving the list into her pouch, Yomiko took off down the street as fast as her legs could take her. She really did want to go ahead and finish this mission as quickly as possible. It took no time for her at all to get to the store, but this is where she, obviously, had to slow down so she could be sure to gather everything needed. In total, there were items: eggs, sugar, flour, butter, baking powder, salt, and milk.

Lavender extract and freshly dried lavender buds? Hm, that’s an odd take---I guess she is replacing the vanilla extract?

Shrugging, Yomiko quickly went up and down the aisles that she knew, getting all of the common ingredients rather quickly and easily. However, when she looked where the vanilla extract was on the shelf, all she saw was that, almond, orange, and lemon. Panicking a little, she went back up and down the aisle a few times to see if there were any extra displays of more unique extracts or flavorings. Nothing. Shoving the normal ones aside, she started to dig in the back of the shelf where she then started finding flavors like root beer, lime, pineapple, chamomile, and then, finally, lavender.

Grinning, she snatched it up and went to the small flower shop a few doors down to which they happily were able to give her some dried lavender buds. Tying her bags up nice and tight, Yomiko took off back down the street towards the retirement home community that the old woman lived in. Skidding to a halt when she arrived, Yomiko cheerily strode up to the front door and knocked three times just as she had when she arrived. A few moments later the old woman opened the door, looked Yomiko up and down before muttering something under her breath while snatching the bags of groceries from the much younger woman and shutting the door.

Yomiko blinked a few times, standing there with her arm still outstretched from where she had been carrying the two bags. Clearing her throat she just stared at the closed door in disbelief before hanging her head and taking her leave to head back and report in.

How humiliating...
