Chuta’s Genin Exam

Today was the day. The day he had been focusing on for months, the day he anticipated, the day that simply had to push to the forefront of his mind. The last few months had been exciting and derailing at the same time, discovering you are part of a clan with ancient roots would shock anyone, Chuta found it more than daunting to focus on the exam.

His hand wrapped around the handle to the class room. Taking a deep breath he entered and took a seat. Why was he so nervous? This wasn’t his first test. He had been tested on these techniques plenty of times, little quizzes here and there, his teach was under the impression that the more you did something the faster it became second nature, Chuta found this true as well. His nerves still got the better of him. He would finally graduate from the academy, finally be able to partake in missions, make a living, help more around the house for his uncle didn’t have to work so hard, after today, god willing, he will become a true shinobi.

Chuta walked to his chair. Of course he was the first one in the room. He always had to be early to things. He sat down and tried to read from one of the scrolls he took out of his packs, one on ninjutsu and how to gain tactical advantage in combat. He kept catching his mind drifting off, catching himself thinking about the test, performing the hand seals correctly, controlling his chakra just right. He shook his head and took a deep breath.

Icarus strode into the classroom, a tall man with a long curving scar running across one side of his face giving the man a permanent scowl. Even as he turned to face the assembled students giving them a half smile his face seemed to do nothing more than grimace. “So you think yourselves worthy of being calledShinobi do you?” He barked in the harsh and commanding tone only a veteran officer picks up. Pausing for a moment to wait for an affirmative he would continue chuckling in what he intended to be a friendly manner, though it no doubt came off more sinister than anything. “Well then let us see if you believes are warranted, first off let’s see each and every one of you perform a simple clone technique technique, that shouldn’t be too hard for you” he said his face turning serious as he spoke

This instructor was someone Chuta hadn’t seen before. He was intimating looking, the scar on his face, how he spoke, it was a glimpse at what a true shinobi would become. Calloused and harsh. The sacrifices they made for their village was astonishing, to be willing to give that much of life in order to protect what is most dear to your heart, weather it be family or a dream, Chuta admired it. Though the sweat began to trickle down his forehead. No matter how much he admired this instructor, he was still center stage. His palms began to sweat but he forced himself. Almost out of reaction, or stupidity, Chuta raised his arm. “I’ll go first.”

His body was noticeably nervous. His hands shook, sweat on his face and forehead, a little hesitation in his voice. Nonetheless, he moves to the center of the room. Calm... he told himself while taking three deep breaths. All he needed to do was rely on his training, it will all fall into place.

His hands darted across his body. The chakra pulsed through his body. Chuta could feel it extending into the space around him and in no time two plumes of smoke erupted on both sides of him, one to his right, the other to his left. His head moved to check them out. On his right was a perfect copy of himself, all the way down to the healing wounds on his hands from a few days ago. But, on his left was a monstrosity, the clone couldn’t even function, it was laying in a heap on the ground.

Chuta stood in the room serious and concerned. “I can do better. Please allow me to attempt it again.” He urged. How would he explain failing his test to his uncle? Shame washed over Chuta as his face became pale.

A knock would be heard within the classroom currently holding the scheduled genin exams of the day, the students and even proctor surprised by the unexpected alarm. The door slowly creaked open as a ghastly individual with long raven silky hair would be seen donning the typical attire of a Konoha jounin, his calloused expression sending chills down the various participant’s spines. The seemingly vexed jounin would be greeted by his peer Icarus as the two discussed in isolation a grand issue at hand, his ally having to retreat and relinquish the remainder of the genin exam to Xeruko.

The new proctor would move to the middle of the classroom as he took a seat atop the teacher’s desk presented in front of the entirety of the class, overlooking the mass of youth wishing to rise above the ranks and become an official Shinobi, the glum voice of Xeruko would echo across the motionless classroom in sheer disinterest, “Due to unforeseen circumstances, Icarus-Sensei has been forced to handle some important business and I’m here to complete your exam. You may refer to me as Xeruko-Sensei, and from what I can see we’re currently at the clone phase…”

A yawn would escape the elusive smirk of Xeruko as his bloodshot eyes observed the students before him, the scar under his eye and pale skin projecting a demeanor of spite and detached from human emotion. He would soon rest his eyes upon a peculiar man with a clone fully functional and another failing to even move it’s muscles properly, in which he’d beckon to the tall fellow as he began to speak once more, “You there, you’ll be the first to whether you pass or fail this exam. It seems you’ve already attempted to show your prowess as a Shinobi and proven to be inefficient at such a role, on the field someone of your caliber would be useless to your team and likely jeopardize the mission. Konoha is a village that values unison and teamwork, jumping on the scene to aid their struggling comrades without a moment's delay to tackle the enemies at hand. We have no use for someone who arrived at an exam to become a full-fledged Shinobi only partially understanding their craft.” Xeruko would hastily scold the prospect as he viewed his presence here as an insult to the virtue of Konoha: to support their allies in the battlefield to prevail. The young man must rise above the difficulties in order to be of use to the village and grow in strength. Reaching for the folder beside him on the desk he sat upon, pulling out a file documenting the name of the male before him: Chuta Mark, age 25. An odd age to begin one's profession as a Shinobi, gaining no sympathy as his relentless bombardment continued at the matured individual, expecting someone of such an age to take things more seriously here.

Xeruko would strictly glance at Chuta as moments passed before continuing on, the disappointed Jounin wishing to bring out the strength within this prospect, “Chuta, you must decide now what your purpose for being here is. The life of Shinobi is no child’s game, you can’t expect to succeed solely by idly practicing your technique and training sporadically, I won’t allow another youth unprepared for the battlefield to be sentenced to their death so soon. Show me now the aptitude you possess as a Shinobi with your jutsu and resolve, perfectly perform the clone technique or else your presence within this academy shall cease to exist.” The age of the experienced shinobi would show in his last words to the aspiring male as the time to fortify his resolve and show the truth in his purpose as a Shinobi would be upon them, the black haired veteran keeping a stagnant gaze as the boy as the clock ticked meticulously, ricocheting throughout the dumbstruck space.

Chuta was just explained, no, begging to be aloud to try just one more time when the door thudded. A feeling tingled down Chuta's back, he wasn't sure if it was the new instructor or him just getting a little more nervous at the fact that there was another ninja there. Once instructor Icerus had left the feeling remained, so it couldn't be that there was two.

Chuta listened. He was trying not to take anything he said personal, telling himself that whatever was said was to keep him and his future team alive. He decided to nod and try again, he was thankful. His hands moved across his body as fast as his 33 speed would allow. The hand seals were perfect. His chakra flow was steady. He could feel himself get better and better each time he had practiced, now it was time not to just rely on his repetition, but to show them, show them all that he was going to be someone.

His chakra stretched outside of his body, as it built up he waited for just a split second. Once the image was clear as crystal he let the jutsu pop. One on his left and one on his right. As the smoke cleared he could see two perfect operating clones next to him. He fought a smile and relaxed his body. His arms fell to his side. "I do not practice sporadically. My training is done every morning, on my free time, and even for play. I will not be a burden. I refuse. Now, what more does my sensei require?" Chuta bowed. He meant no disrespect, though it was full of heart and determination, his voice was quiet, but smeared with a, 'how dare you' tone.

His words were direct and daring, they surprised Chuta. What had come over him? The long days and nights training the techniques, learning of his new clan, learning the Projection technique. The dragon's blood, did it really flow through his veins?

The younging’s movements seemed well enough, as well as any series of hand seals the honed overseer spectated countless times. An easy gaze would remain as he watched the boy formulate his chakra, before projecting it out through his intended usage of jutsu. With a quick puff of smoke the scene would unfold as the remaining class members stayed in their place, in which a more satisfying picture would reveal itself under the intense magnifying glass Xeruko held before the student already on thin ice.

With success comes confidence, despite his previous failings he seemed to carry a snark bite to his words after his most recent success, a reality that would’ve never came to be had he been more adequate for the challenge from the start. The proctor kept his cool expression as he allowed the greenhorn to finish his empowering speech filled with his own determination, sensing another yawn to take place before suppressing the urge. It remained short and sweet, much to Xeruko’s pleasure as the uninterested Jounin refused to take the words reinforced by a sudden victory seriously, especially after the display he witnessed earlier. He’d lazily lift his leg to cross the other as he extended an arm behind him to use as a support to take on a more lax posture. Analyzing the youth for a lengthened time, he’d speak once more, “If that is the case, I expect to see a more effective approach to your training regiment from here on. In normal circumstances, one doesn’t get another chance to perform their techniques as you have been granted, that is the point of being a Shinobi after all - effectiveness in unexpected predicaments. The capability to succeed upon one's first attempt.” The proctor would leave him with those words in order to allow him to think about the seriousness of the entire exam without scolding him any longer, blind determination and hope would only get him so far - results need to be made.

Following up on his words Xeruko would continue, “Now, allow us to run through a scenario. You’ve just defeated me, an enemy to the village, in battle. However, you’re behind enemy lines and reinforcements would soon arrive. You need to be prepared for the battle ahead as your own reinforcements won’t make it in time, though need to set up a proper ambush. Utilize the Transformation Technique to turn into me while maintaining your Clones for the battle ahead, then walk around the classroom with your clone and transformation active to simulate your efficiency maneuvering during preparations.” This would be the true test upon whether Chuta had the aptitude to begin his journey as a Shinobi. The transformation technique has been known to be taxing on those who aren’t prepared for maintaining the accuracy and consumption of chakra for their facade, on top of keeping the clones active and in working condition this would come to be the true decider whether he could endure the hardships of their world. His scruffy facial hair would hide behind a pale complexion, Xeruko’s fine eyelashes and piercing coal eyes with a gruesome scar underneath his right eye. The long and elegant black hair reaching down in abundance to his shoulders would complete what could be seen with his clothing in mind. Xeruko would wait patiently for Chuta to fulfill his requests properly, testing the boys resolve where it mattered most.

Such a daunting task for an academy student... Chuta's steam began to turn back to water as the realization hit him. Did he anger the proctor into being harder on him? Chuta didn't sulk, he didn't even let his thoughts touch his lips or facial expression. He was going to bear the brunt of his words full on. Lets do this. He thought as he placed his hands at attention again and bowed. "Yes, Sensei." He finished.

Chuta's hands raised to his chest as he took in his instructors appearance. The long black hair, well kept and to his shoulders. His eyelashes. The scar by his eyes. The cool complexion. Chuta smirked, then shook his head. There isn't time for smugness. This attitude of his, this eagerness to be the best and to let everyone know it. It had to be tamed. That would have to come later, Chuta had more pressing things to consider.

His chakra pulsed, a flash, a smoke, and he was standing there in the form of his instructor. The scruff under his chin, the black gentle hair, the scar. Everything was as he saw his instructor. The way his clothes sat on his body, he even tried to mimic his walk as he strutted across the room to the eastern wall. With every movement he could feel a war within him. His chakra being pulled in three directions. It was difficult to maintain, sure, but Chuta didn't let on. He balanced his chakra as he walked to the back of the room. His two clones took up positions within the class. One standing by the wall next to the door, as if waiting for a would be attacker to enter. The other in the western back corner, watching the windows. An important part of the ambush would be to see the people coming, then to move silently to a position of attack, though this was an advanced technique he learned from one of his uncles scrolls, he thought he would put it to action.

As Chuta moved to the front of the class, completing his full circuit, the clone by the door leaped to the other side of the room and then to the back, as if he saw someone approaching, and got into position. The clones movements were difficult to control as he walked, but he was able to keep the balance of chakra. His clone landed as quiet as possible in a crouched stance.

Chuta bowed. He was afraid to open his mouth, afraid to hear what he would say. Instead he kept his mouth closed and let his actions speak.

“Quite exceptional,” Xeruko would applaud Chuta with his words upon nearing the finish of his circuit, already succeeding in his mission just from the start of such a daunting task, the boy came off as a determined soul that would fail to let go of a task once he already grabbed the rope to pull him to victory, and it seemed the proctor’s assessment remained true.

The hand which Xeruko strategically stretched behind him across the desk would already be fostering the headband those within the academy sought for so long; the fanatics gruelling exterior would shift into a lighthearted rest as his eyes gleamed wishes of hope and prosperity towards the boy as he stretched out the headband signaling his acceptance as a Shinobi to the village, “For you, Chuta Mark. It seems my judgement was clouded on this affair, the resolve and confidence you carry for your own quality is more than adequate, and I hope you extend such a resolve to the village’s aid in their time of need. Congratulations.”

Xeruko would outstretched his arm offering the headband and a few lasting words to the youth as his path as a Shinobi would only just begun, along with the hardships that would surely come, “Remember as a Shinobi, there will be hardships and lost that we must endure and overcome. Never lose sight of yourself in such states of being, as otherwise you’ll come to forsake the nature of yourself and your home.” Xeruko would warn Chuta along with the remaining class that listened, giving the boy what he came for and allowing him to leave the facilities as a new fledged Shinobi. Afterwards he would continue the exams for the remaining dreams that wished to be acknowledged as Chuta would be the first to reach his goal opening him to a world of new possibilities.

Chuta bowed again. "Thank you sensei" he said then reached for the headband. It had been a long time for him, but he finally made it to this moment, when he actually joined the ninja ranks. His mother and father would be proud and he couldn't wait to tell his uncle. Excitement pulsed in his chest.

After taking the instructors words in, "Quiet exceptional" Chuta couldn't help but smile. His inner dragon roared a sense of known pride, saying, "of course, what else would you expect from a Pendragon." But he didn't let those words slip from his mouth. He just thanked the instructor and went back to his seat.

Tying the headband around his head he sat there till class was over. Looking over the other students, some were able to preform the correct jutsu to pass, others were not. Chuta was happy that his moment was over.

Later that day he would tell his uncle who would be happy and hug Chuta. They would go out to eat or his uncle would cook something special for them both. He would go on about the day Chuta's parents earned their headbands and explain what this meant for them now. How helping around the village and earning a wage could benefit not only Konoha, but the apartment as well...
