Non-Solid Clones and the Log, oh Joy

Makussu impatiently fidgeted underneath his desk as his instructor droned on and on about the chakra control needed to perform certain techniques. Sure, it’s important stuff, but the fact that they repeat the exact same thing with different wording all the time got on his nerves. He looked over at the clock and sighed under his breath. 10 minutes left until the end of class and still his instructor talked. he glanced at his notebook, and an idea suddenly popped into his head. Stealthily pulling five sheets of paper out of his notebook he slowly got to work. Bending the papers so that they eventually resembled a generic birds head with a long beak, he gently pushed the top and bottom of each to avoid wrinkling and yet at the same time provide and entrance from the “neck” of the bird. He quietly slipped each finger into the holes, feeling the paper take the shape of his fingers each time. He flexed his hand and gave a small grin at the paper claws he just put on his hand. He absentmindedly tried to see and find out if he could make some hand seals while wearing them, without chakra involved of course. Finding he couldn’t even do the simple Tora sign due to the curved nature of his claws, he simply zoned out from the last few minutes of class until he was suddenly shook out of his daze by the sound of the academies bell ringing. However as he walked towards the door, he noticed that his fellow classmates lining up and being handed a scroll by their sensei as they walked out. He internally shrugged to himself as he walked out of the Academy and through the gates as his parents trusted himself to take care of himself. He ran through the streets of Konoha, weaving through the afternoon traffic as he headed towards the section of the village reserved for the Training Grounds. As he ran the crowd slowly thinned until he came to a stop and collapsed into a tree at his favorite training ground, winded from running for so long. Catching his breath, he opened up the scroll and muttered to himself.

“Well what do you know, the Substitution Jutsu and Clone Technique. I was wondering when they were going to pass these out. Well, I know what I’m working on today!”

He pushed up from his resting position, stretched, and got to work. According to the scroll, he had to focus his chakra into the area around his hands, and then visualize in his minds eye what he looked like. He then would have to simply do the hand seals of the jutsu and a replication of himself would magically appear in front of him. Sounded simple enough. Sending chakra around the general area of his hand, he saw himself, in his minds eye. Brown hair, white skin, a white shirt with black sleeves and brown shorts. He then sealed the process with a shout.

“Clone Jutsu!”

A sudden poof of smoke in front of him and Makussu stopped breathing for a second in order to not inhale the smoke. It quickly dissipated and in front of him stood a clone of himself. However, it had a few minor discrepancies. his eyes were black, unlike his brown ones, and his skin was too pale. Also, his black sleeves were gray and the brown shorts were more on a brownish black color. He sighed out loud at the mistakes and dispelled the clone, starting over. He focused his chakra in the area around his hands, trying with more focus to keep the chakra from escaping into his arms. He once again envisioned himself in his minds eye, paying more attention to the colors of his body and clothes, seeing the shades of color instead of just a generic color of brown or black. Satisfied with his visualization, he once again performed his hand signs and announced his jutsu to the clearing.

“Clone Jutsu!”

Another poof of smoke led to another clone, one that saw Makussu smiling from ear to ear as he noted the sudden improvement that came as he saw that none of the flaws on his previous clone were present one the new one. He dispelled the clone and thought about the current situation. Maybe the clone was a lucky shot. Maybe he simply was that good. In reality, he didn’t care. He was able to perform the clone technique and substitution jutsu, both of the jutsu’s needed in order to pass the academy! He cheered and opened up the scroll once more to the part on the clone technique. reading the instructions twice over, he went through the handsigns, practicing a few times to keep it in his memory. After a few more repetitions he decided to do it for real. He visualised the commonly used substitution item known throughout Konoha, the Log. The Logs that had saved so many lives in combat that it had been deemed necessary by some to refer to it with a capital in writing, they were that useful. A thick trunk with a yellowish center, a light green bark along with a beginning of a branch on the top. Fling through the five hand seals required he shouted out his technique, hoping for success.

“Substitution Jutsu!”

Makussu felt a strange tugging sensation in his stomach and almost panicked for a second as his vision was obscured by smoke. He opened his eyes fearing the worst and was surprised that he was on the other side of the clearing he had been practicing in, a mint green log with a pale yellow center occupying the very spot which he had been occupying a few seconds ago. That was when it really hit him. He had just learned two jutsu. Not one, but two Jutsu. Not only that, but he could pass the Academy Exam! He jumped for joy as that fact finally hit home to his nervous system and began cheering out loud. He ran over to his previous spot by the tree, carefully rolled his scroll up and headed back home, the sun already beginning it’s descent behind him. As it disappeared under the horizon out of habit he watched it for a few minutes as he walked, watching it stain the clouds in various purples and oranges. As the sun finally set, he gave a smile in it’s direction as he headed towards the direction of his house once more. Makussu Koutaishi was going to be a great ninja, and nothing was going to stop him!
