Hellaniko Mayori's Second Day [training]

The second day of Hellaniko Mayori’s time in Kumogakure was going no better than his first. In Island Village, he had only spent enough time in class to gain the necessary reading and arithmetical skills to help out in his father’s shop; the island’s subjugation to the Sky Kingdom made further devotion to his education seem counterproductive. At any rate, he had certainly not learned the intricacies of the history and tactics of Kumogakure ninjas like all of his classmates. Even worse, the tales of high seas adventures that had always so impressed his friends from home were of little interest to students who had grown up hearing of the exploits of Misaki Takami and her predecessors. As the class ended, Mayori came to the conclusion that he had to do something, anything to prove to his classmates that he was worthy of them. Then, he had a flash of insight; Hellaniko Mayori might not yet be the ninja that his classmates were, but none of them were the waterbug that he was.
Four hours later, Hellaniko Mayori went back to the pond that was the site of his earlier failed attempt at Surface Walking. This time, we was dressed only in swim trunks and sandals, his sunburnt and often job-scarred torso fully visible. Several of his Classmates were around him, alternately climbing and hurling kunai at the trees surrounding the body of water. Mayori jumped into the water and started swimming.

And didn’t stop

For minute after agonizing minute, Mayori swam between the dropoff that set the pond water at chest height and the wooden post at the center of the lake, tapping the top of the pole each time. 5 laps, 15, 20, 30, 48  and a half laps before his burning arms and torso finally forced him to stop. When the Island village native finally grabbed hold of the post to help catch his breath, he turned to see that many of his fellow students staring at him, he realized that he had finally made an impact on them.

Then he realized that he’d probably lost his swim trunks
somewhere around lap 30.
