Globs of slobber flew onto Ryota’s hoodie and hands, causing him to hold back his disgust. A group of 6 medium sized dogs had just been let out of their kennels, and they were all jumping at him in search of some affection or attention. Across the room there was a man assigned to clean the kennels, and he looked over at Ryota and handed him an odd-looking leash. The leash had one handle but 6 harnesses on the other end, seemingly custom made for this task.

As Ryota began to try to corral a dog into the leash, the man spoke up. “As I’m sure you know, our job is to do a deep clean of this building. We’re handling the downstairs suites, so we’re lucky. It’s just these six dogs and their kennels here, so I should have the cleaning done in the next forty-five minutes. Come back around then.”

Ryota looked up at the man and nodded, not sure what else to add. With quite more effort than expected, he hooked the last dog up to the leash and departed out into the streets.

This dog shelter was in the northern section of Hoshigakure, so Ryota decided to take the dogs to the Tachibana Wildlife Reserve. They walked at a brisk pace on a path near the edge of the forest, and memories flooded into Ryota’s head of simpler times. He once had a dog in his childhood, and one of the dogs he was walking looked quite reminiscent of it. Spotting a bit of open field up ahead, Ryota decided to have a little fun and went out there to take the dogs off their harnesses.

There was a beagle, a hound dog, two pit-bulls and a lab mix. They all took turns chasing each other, pulled at each other's fur and tackled each other like puppies. Ryota unfortunately had to dispose of a few piles of poop in the midst of it, but he had always been fond of animals so he didn’t mind. His mother and him bonded on that in the past; she had always taught him about different animals when he was young and read books to him about them. They had a hound dog when he was little, and they spent all day every day together.

Ryota’s mind was suddenly snapped back to the present when he heard a loud yelp from one of the dogs. Ryota wasn’t sure what had happened, but they all seemed like they were ready to keel over from exhaustion so he decided it was time to head back. On the walk back to the dog shelter, Ryota saw a food stand selling skewered beef and decided to stop. After thinking about his memories, he was feeling nostalgic and decided to express some generosity.

“I’ll take six,” Ryota stated in a flat tone. The cook nodded and got to work, with six skewers hot and ready in no time. Ryota pulled the beef off the stick and tossed one to each dog, saving one for himself to eat on the walk back. After a few minutes, the group arrived back at the shelter, and Ryota walked back inside to the downstairs suites.

“Just in time!”, the cleaner called out to Ryota, motioning him to put the dogs away in the now clean kennels. He gave each dog a nice head rub before walking them back into their dens, and walked home from the shelter feeling quite melancholic.
