Snow Place Like Home [Vaera, IO] Empty Snow Place Like Home [Vaera, IO]

Mon Dec 13, 2021 2:49 pm
Spoiler:

With a yawn, Ryō woke and sat up in bed, rubbing one eye with a fist. Yawning again, he blearily blinked and looked around his room while his brain caught up with things. It was a normal day, with normal priorities; get dressed make something to eat, go train a little, investigate the soft, glowing scroll on his desk, maybe see about asking- His brain finally locked onto the strangeness in the room and his eyes zeroed in onto the odd scroll that he definitely did not recall having purchased or placed upon his desk last night before bed.

Tossing on his usual garb, he picked up the scroll and was surprised to see numerous snowflakes drift down onto the table as he lifted it up. It was also surprisingly cold and still glowing, but otherwise seemed like a perfectly normal scroll. He turned it over in his hand a few times and briefly considered taking it to someone for investigation, but then turned the idea down as he didn't want to appear like a child who had to seek permission from a parent to do anything. He opened the scroll and laid it out on the table and began reading.

It wasn't until he leaned forward and absent-mindedly placed a hand in one corner of the scroll where one might expect to place a summoning circle that he noticed that it wasn't written in a language that he actually knew, and yet could somehow understand just fine, but also he became aware of the glow enveloping his whole body. He had just enough time to step back and let out a yelp of surprise when he felt himself be transported... somewhere.

The first sensation he became aware of was the cold; the wet, harsh cold of snow being pressed against him from all directions. With a shocked cry, he leapt into the air and out of the snowdrift he had so unceremoniously been deposited onto. He shook himself free of the snow and patted himself as best he could to warm up some before he began to truly take in the surroundings. Clearly, he was no longer in Konoha.

Still, as he looked around and saw lights and snow and all manner of natural beauty and the distant sight and smells of a village, there were certainly worse places to be abruptly whisked away to than here. After all, he could have been pulled away to some kind of nightmarish land of zombies, ghosts, and freaky cultists.

He found himself in front of a set of gates clearly marking the entry to the village. A large, stylized peppermint stood atop the gate; an apt centerpiece, as the scent of peppermints and gingerbread wafted lazily through the air. Ryō couldn't help but smile as, despite the snow and winter wind, he felt a warmth grow in his chest. There was something truly magical about this place, and he could not help but want to explore more of it. It was then, of course, that Ryō remembered something very important.

"How the hell do I get home?" He wondered aloud.

Snow Place Like Home [Vaera, IO] Empty Re: Snow Place Like Home [Vaera, IO]

Mon Dec 13, 2021 4:43 pm
There is a lot of strange in the world. Much of it can be explained quite easily. Some of it cannot. However, when one finds themselves cozy in bed one minute and tossed into the shivering embrace of winter the next with nary an idea to how they'd gotten there in mind, that was one of those times when they should question their surroundings and find a source of safety and warmth.

Vaera had yet to come to that natural conclusion herself.

What had started as a typically lazy morning had taken a quick turn for the bizarre. A groan had escaped the bundle of blankets and pillows on the young woman's bed shortly after she'd noticed she had overslept her alarm -again. The chill in the morning air had chased her back under the covers several times before the call of nature forced her awake. Then, on her way to her closet, the sight of a mysterious scroll resting atop her dresser had caught her eye. She hadn't remembered putting it there, though she sometimes slept heavily enough that someone sneaking it in without waking her wasn't out of the question.

It had been unnaturally cold, but curiosity won out over caution as she opened the note to read its contents. Just as the last few flakes of snow fell from its unraveling page, the room around her vanished in an instant, and the cold of winter bit at her bare feet. Her pajamas and thin robe did nothing to stave off the elements; nevermind the small shriek that failed to do much at all to prevent the rush of chilling air into her face.

That had been several minutes ago already. In that time, the usual questions had run through the teenager's mind. Where was she? How did she get here? Why was she here? Those sorts of thoughts were inevitable, as was the realization that the scroll had something to do with each of them. However, what little survivalist training she'd received did kick into gear, and in a puff of smoke as white as the snow that surrounded her, Vaera had transformed her nightly outfit into something far more fitting of the situation.

So, it was when another individual had appeared relatively close by, she emerged from behind a tree dressed in a thick pink, ankle-length coat lined with fur, complete with boots and gloves that were insulated well enough.

"That's a good question." She called out in almost mock answer to the stranger, an odd way to introduce herself. The snow crunched loudly underneath her feet as she trudged closer. However, rather than suspicion of the boy who was clearly just as confused as she had been, she smiled warmly and offered her name, "I'm Vaera. Let me guess: magic scroll?"

Snow Place Like Home [Vaera, IO] Empty Re: Snow Place Like Home [Vaera, IO]

Tue Dec 14, 2021 3:37 pm
Ryō yelled in surprise at the apparent suddenness to which the girl had appeared beside him, jumping up onto one leg in flight and paradoxically preparing to strike at her. Realizing that he was not, in fact, being threatened, Ryō did his best to regain his composure as she approached him and proffered her name to him. From her guess, he figured she had likely been transported by a very similar scroll as he had. "Yeah, which means you did too." He started to turn away before his brain reminded him of his manners and he turned around to blurt out his name. "I'm Ryō Senju."

Now having tripped over himself twice in mere moments, Ryō turned back to glance at the village; it was certainly resplendent enough to appear magical. There was a moment as he considered what to do before nodding to himself, right as a thick scene of warm cookies and spices began to waft through on a crispy, wintry breeze. "Well, we're not gonna find anything to eat out here. Let's go check out the village and see what we can find." Turning, and quietly hoping that Vaera would follow, Ryō began to march into the village.

The inside of the village was brightly lit and colored, with festive reds and greens and whites twinkling in the night air, each catching in the delicate snowfall in radiance fashion. Small elves hurried to and fro the various buildings; some carried with them great bags of toys and presents while others carried with their trays of cookies and other confectionary treats and mugs of drink.

"Hey!" Ryō blinked in surprise and looked around for the man who grunted at him but found no one in sight. "Down here, buddy." Glancing down, he found himself staring at a rather short elf man. Unlike most of the other elves, he sported a massive beard that only served to highlight his aggression and small frame at the same time. "You just gonna stand there all night, or are ya gonna guard the shop?" As if already assuming an answer, he turned and marched towards one of the nearby shops and gave an expectant motion to be followed.

"Stand here, try and look like you could fight your way out of a wet bag without her help, and we'll bring ya something to eat in a bit." Ryō blustered while trying to figure out just what the elf meant by that statement as he marched off and disappeared into the crowd of elves. "It's no big deal. He's just a jerk, doesn't know anything," Ryō said with more than a slightly petulant tone in his words. There was no missing the load grumble from his stomach when a plate of cookies was walked past, the scent of warm sugar and cinnamon making his grin before remembering that he was supposed to be the opposite of everything the elf had said, just on principle, and he stood back up and started scanning the area. After a moment, he muttered under his breath, "Nothing wrong with wanting a cookie or two..."

Snow Place Like Home [Vaera, IO] Empty Re: Snow Place Like Home [Vaera, IO]

Wed Dec 15, 2021 4:00 pm
A quiet giggle escaped the kunoichi, who was not hiding her amusement at the stranger's reaction. Why wasn't she just as on guard as him? That might've been for the best, but something about the serene tranquility of the peaceful, snowy landscape just made everything feel so comforting. In fact, she was just about to plop down on her back in a magnificent snow drift and make a snow angel when the warm scent of freshly baked cinnamon and spice wafted towards her on the air.

It didn't take any convincing at all for her to begin following after the boy, though they were more going in the same direction than anything at this point. Only a few steps into the magnificent and magical village, her eyes sparkled in wonder at the sights before her. Vaera smiled warmly enough to stave off the cold at the many -if rather short- people walking to and fro with massive bags of toys and goodies slung over their backs. It didn't take much to think of the obvious of what this could be, nor did it take long for her childish wonder to win out over cold logic.

"May I?" While Ryo was busy trying unsuccessfully to get information out of one of the diminutive residents of the snowy village, Vaera had stooped down to address another directly as he carried a tray of steaming mugs quickly past. Whether it was out of sheer kindness or the inability to resist a pretty face, she was positively ecstatic as she stood straight again with one of the mugs cradled carefully in both hands. The smell of chocolate was nearly impossible to miss in the steam, and she was delighted to spy several tiny marshmallows floating in the beverage.

While Ryo's stomach growled in aggravation, the fair-haired kunoichi giggled again in glee at the first taste of her little treat while she hurried to catch up before she could be left behind.

"I think they're sweet." Her voice twirled off her tongue, before that very same muscle licked the small bit of hot cocoa from her upper lip. A particularly loud slurp followed as she took another drink of the agonizingly sweet chocolate. "What do you think he meant by "guard the shop," though?" Another loud slurp followed, tailed again by the sight of Vaera licking chocolate from her upper lip.

Snow Place Like Home [Vaera, IO] Empty Re: Snow Place Like Home [Vaera, IO]

Wed Dec 15, 2021 5:17 pm
Ryō shrugged, oblivious to the sweet treat Vaera appeared to be enjoying thoroughly and scanned the streets some more. "Who knows,| he said with a ponderous sigh as he scratched the back of his head. "This place is definitely a bit surreal. Who in the world would wanna attack this?"

"Some folks don't wanna be happy, Jack."

Ryō yelled and jumped to the side, shocked at the abrupt reappearance of the bearded elf, along with another two elves who were carrying trays full of cookies. "Good job guarding the place. Here's ya pay." It was a further surprise then when the two smaller elves approached the two shinobi; the elf in front of Ryō merely offered him a cookie while the other one offered Vaera its whole tray. Stunned as he was, Ryō could only hold the cookie in hand as the two elves scampered off.

"B-But we don't even know what we were guarding?"

"The bakery, of course," the bearded elf said as he jerked a thumb towards the window. Inside, the lights flickered on as elves began to stream inside, carrying ingredients and working the appliances to bake cookies. The cookies were transferred to great big platter trays, which then were carted off at surprising speed.

"Don't mean ya didn't do that job." He turned and continued to march on, muttering under his breath. Ryō could still make out his words and frowned. "What kinda guy trys ta talk himself outta gettin' some cookies? Don't make no sense." The Senju boy did his best not to be too grumpy as he finished off his cookie, wiping the crumbs of cinnamon and sugar away from the corner of his mouth. It was hard to stay mad with cookies this good to snack on.

They approached a large building with great open windows showing all the toy-making happening inside. As they got right up to the doors, Ryō blinked in surprise at a long bell ringing out, heralding out a veritable stream of elves. They did not slow for a moment and rapidly filed out of the building and out towards a large stadium-looking complex. "Alright now, this one'll be a bit tougher for ya. We gotta take a bit of a break and listen to the Big Man for a bit, so y'all need to stick put and keep an eye out for this place. Some trolls might try ta pop in and make some mayhem. If they do, just rough 'em up a bit and get 'em outta here. Alright? Alright." The elf didn't even bother waiting for an answer from the Senju before trailing off to follow the last of the elves toward the stadium.

Ryō by now was thoroughly flummoxed and had no idea what to do. Because he turned towards Vaera for some advice just then, his eyes never caught the small trollish-looking figures that had clamored onto the roof of a building across the street and were glaring balefully at the shop the two Leaf Shinobi had been dropped off in front of.

Snow Place Like Home [Vaera, IO] Empty Re: Snow Place Like Home [Vaera, IO]

Thu Dec 16, 2021 3:02 pm
Before the two could figure out between themselves just what they were supposed to be doing, the gruff and bearded elf had reappeared again. A brief squeak of surprise escaped the kunoichi as she jumped in place, and she quickly settled into the background to nurse her embarrassed ego with more of her chocolate treat. Fortunately for her, the conversation moved just as quickly as before, and before she knew what was going on again, another elf had offered her a whole plate of cookies!

She was really starting to like this place.

While the bearded elf explained -rather briefly- their next task to the pair, Vaera took a bite of a cookie from her plate. A delighted hum fought past her smile before she washed the crumbs down with more chocolate. Quite unprofessionally, her eyes and attention began to wander around the village while she munched and drank. Their surroundings were so breathtakingly beautiful that it was hard not to want to look! However, something in particular had caught her eye...

It was only from the corner of her eye that she saw Ryo looking at her expectantly, or perhaps quizzically. His back was turned to the strange figures moving across the rooftops, and the kunoichi was just about to tell him to turn around and look when something came flying directly at them! With another squeak escaping her, she hopped and ducked an almost exaggerated distance to avoid the ball of snow that plopped harmlessly against the wall behind them.

"Trolls!" She exclaimed just loud enough for Ryo to hear and understand her urgency, before she ducked down again to avoid another snowball. However, this time, the ball didn't simply turn to mush as it hit the wall, but banged off the wooden side and exploded into shards of ice. The shards were ultimately harmless, but the message was clear: don't get hit by the ice.

Despite the ridiculousness of what was quickly becoming a snowball fight with trolls to defend Santa's workshop, Vaera moved quickly to set aside her tray and mug and scoop up a handful of snow for herself. With a good deal of accuracy, she lobbed the packed -yet soft- projectile at the figures attacking them from the opposite rooftop. The snowy orb splashed harmlessly against the shoulder of the troll who had been about to throw another ball of ice at them, though it did succeed in making him drop his improvised weapon. Meanwhile, Vaera's grin had only grown wider, and she giggled like a child let out to play on the first snow day of the year.

Who could possibly take this situation seriously?

"C'mon, Ryo! Grab some snow and help!" Her laughing tone of voice hardly suggested a tense battle with the trolls, though Vaera wasted little time in scooping up another handful and throwing it faster than the trolls could attack them -individually, at least. They remained outnumbered, but perhaps their training would guarantee their victory. Her second throw struck another troll in the unprotected stomach, earning a soft grunt of discomfort that caused it to step back and let another take its place.

Then, Vaera was beamed in the face with a retaliatory snowball, and flopped back into the snow with a brief, shrill cry of shock -mostly for how cold her face was now. However, rather than be injured, she was immediately lost to a giggling fit, and was right back up again and throwing more haphazard projectiles at the roof bound trolls.

Snow Place Like Home [Vaera, IO] Empty Re: Snow Place Like Home [Vaera, IO]

Thu Dec 16, 2021 11:58 pm
Ryō heard her cry a heartbeat before he felt something soul-chilling cold rush beside his left ear. Thunder roared in his ears and lightning rushed through his nerves as his body reacted purely on instinct. As he started to drop against the half-wall for cover, seeing a white flash across his vision from above as something nearly blew against the back of his head. In his peripheral vision, he watched as Vaera slowly fell to the ground, eyes wide in alarm as shards of ice exploded from against the wall that had just been her opposite. They were under attack by the trolls.

Again Ryō moved long before conscious thought floated back to the surface of his mind. He dipped towards his right and went into a tight roll, feeling the hard, stabbing cold rush along his back as he did so. As he came up, his fingers slipped through the snow and crushed it together. His vision snapped into focus on the first troll nearest to him. He could watch its toothy mouth curl into a sneer as it leaped from one leg to the other, side to side. Its fat, purple tongue lolled to one side of its mouth, and then the other as it switched feet.

Something snapped in his right arm, an explosive contraction in his bicep that caused him to hurl the ice like a rocket out of his hand. It cut through the air, gleaming in the otherwise festive light before it caught the troll squarely between its eyes. He watched with a grin as its mind froze from shock and snow; its eyes rolled into the back of its head and its sense of balance was destroyed, sending it toppling backward. Its back cut into the snowy roof below it as the light around where it had stood glimmered with light as the snow, freed from its packed form, drifted through the winds.

A warcry split the air as Ryō whooped and immediately began to jump from lamp post to lamp post, the soles of his feet sticking impossibly to the frozen metal. He cupped his hands in the crisp winter air, his fingers curled together in darkness and began to pool water chakra into them. The frigid air immediately began to freeze the water chakra as it formed, creating the perfect weapon as it did so. Ryō grinned again as he flew.

---

With a laughing cry, Ryō jumped into the air and tossed the snowball. It splashed against the face of another troll, sending the creature tumbling from the rooftop where it fell into a snowdrift and suffered the ignoble fate of having its feet dangle helplessly from above the snow.

The Senju continued his flight through the night, jumping about with wild abandon and cheer. There was no missing the pure joy etched into his every feature as he moved about. He did not stop until the last troll tawdled away into the darkness and he landed next to Vaera with one last victorious cry and held a hand up, seemingly expecting a high-five.

Snow Place Like Home [Vaera, IO] Empty Re: Snow Place Like Home [Vaera, IO]

Fri Dec 17, 2021 3:28 pm
How could she not have fun right now? Even her impromptu companion, Ryo, was getting into the spirit along with her. Though they showed their glee in wildly different ways, and he was certainly much more animated, the pair continued to pelt their mythical foes with snowball after snowball for many minutes to come. If she hadn't known any better, the girl might've thought it was all a dream after all.

The trolls' superior numbers continued to dwindle as the snow drift assault carried on in vain. Vaera's shrill shrieks and fits of giggling were nearly drowned out by Ryo's whooping and hollering as he jumped around the road in the process of fighting back. She remained more or less in place, though not for the sake of being unwilling to move about. No, she had to defend the plate of cookies lying on the snow behind her, after all. They were much too delicious to allow them to be lost to the chaos of such an epic battle.

Finally, the trolls had all but been chased off by the almost coordinated, twin attacks by the young shinobi. Only three or so remained in the shadows of the rooftop, as poorly illuminated as they were. Vaera ducked underneath another ball of ice, throwing a ball of her own snow in retaliation that struck the aggressor in the face just as she had been made to suffer before. However, when it lost its footing and tumbled over, a wave of regret and fear washed over the kunoichi. She froze, and had to stop herself from running to check that the troll was okay as it landed with a muted thud in the snow beside the warehouse. She breathed a soft sigh of relief when it moved, then the mission at hand came back to mind as it stood and charged straight for them.

Bereft of the time to make another snowball, she reacted on reflex alone and grabbed a warm cookie from the plate. Like a disk, she hurled the crumbly confection of molten chocolate at the troll, where it flew between the stretched sides of its wide mouth and interrupted a most terrible battle cry. Then... It just stopped. It came to a slow saunter, and could be seen chewing on this latest weapon to be used against it. Its lips trembled and twisted, and with a satisfied grin, the troll simply walked off to rejoin its friends.

Vaera wasn't sure if she believed what had just happened before her eyes, but she laughed all the same. As the last of the trolls retreated from Ryo's continued battering, she casually got back to her feet and brushed the snow from her coat and her hair. With her light hair glistening from the snow still caught in its curls, she smiled at her companion and raised her hand in joyous triumph to return the high-five.

"Is that all of them?" She asked as she stooped to pick up the tray of cookies again, her nearly-empty mug balanced on the side of the plate. Adrenaline wavered in her voice, though the faintest hint of disappointment that the fun was over lingered in its tone. She didn't wait long after to begin snacking again, and was utterly delighted to discover that the cookies were -somehow, in fact- still warm.

Snow Place Like Home [Vaera, IO] Empty Re: Snow Place Like Home [Vaera, IO]

Fri Dec 17, 2021 4:10 pm
Ryō smiled at Vaera's cheer and gave a definitive nod. "Yeah, it looks like they've all run off. Looks like we did our job."

"Yeah, yeah. Big whoop. Ya want a cookie for that?" Surprised, but no longer alarmed, at the bearded elf's return, Ryō turned to face him and grinned. "Hey, yeah! Another one of those cookies sounds great." He grinned and stood there with his hand outstretched happily as, sure enough, two more elves stepped forward and gave him a cookie as a reward. He finished this one much faster than the last one, not being quite as hesitant to feast on the treat.

"So I guess your big meeting is done then?" Ryō turned away from the bearded elf and started to glance at the large stadium where elves were streaming out now. Some of them returned to their shops, making more cookies and toys for the endless tide of them washing out of the shops. Others still began to funnel towards the center of the village for some reason.

"Oh yeah. Big Man gave a great speech; he always does. Dunno how he outdoes himself every year, but he does." There was something approaching actual admiration and respect in the bearded elf's voice before he seemed to snap out of his reverie and turned back to face the two of them.  "Come on you two." He turned and began to march off towards the center of the village.

"W-Wait! Where are we going?" Ryō asked in surprise and curiosity. He briefly looked at Vaera and shrugged before following the bossy elf. Somehow, even though there were again trays of cookies and hot chocolate streaming by, Ryō stayed focused on the elf as he led them onward.

"To see the lighting of the tree, of course." Again, Ryō was struck by how normal the bearded elf sounded; there was no trace of animosity or annoyance in his voice at all when he spoke of the tree. Something about how he said it, the look in his eyes, made Ryō follow him towards the center of the village. There, towering over the village without effort, was a tree taller than any Ryō had seen before; its pine needles swayed in the gentle winter breeze as more and more elves began to stream into the village center.

There, on a pedestal in front of the tree, was a sparkling gem the likes of which Ryō had never seen before. The way it sparkled in the festive lights alongside the pure moonlight that streamed down from above them captivated the Senju and he could not help but stare at it.

"That's the Star of the Moon; it's the village's most prized possession." Another elf spoke up from beside him as if sensing the question burning in his mind. He leaned in and whispered conspiratorially as if what he had to say was a large secret. "They say it fell from the heavens themselves years ago. When it was found, they made this village around the location it was discovered in."

Ryō grinned and went back to staring at the Star of the Moon and wondered when the lightning was going to be. If it looked this nice now, how much nicer would it look atop the tree and lit up?

Snow Place Like Home [Vaera, IO] Empty Re: Snow Place Like Home [Vaera, IO]

Wed Dec 22, 2021 3:35 pm
That had, indeed, been all of the trolls, it seemed. With the reappearance of the bearded elf and his sarcastic quipping, Vaera slowly felt the adrenaline leaving her veins as she munched on another cookie. While Ryo again handled all the talking with the supposed boss elf, she was happy to shake the hands and accept the thanks of several other elves as they passed by on their way to whatever their next destination might be. One of the elves even replaced her mug of hot chocolate. How sweet!

[#b200b2]"The tree?"[/color] Finally, Vaera piped up as though she hadn't heard the bearded elf correctly. Without much more prompting, she hurried after the pair, practically bouncing and hopping along in her excitement to see just how wonderful this village's tree would ultimately be. After all, they hadn't done anything small so far; no pun intended. She was sure the tree would be truly magnificent and grand.

Along the way, the kunoichi shared her tray of cookies and greetings with the numerous elves hustling to and fro. She eyed in wide wonder at the decorations as they walked deeper into the village, and laughed openly at the sight of a small group of trolls having another snowball fight with some elves. At least, it looked like they were merely playing to her... On second thought, maybe she'd been mistaken...

By the time they reached the village center, she only had her steaming mug of cocoa left in hand. Her eyes lit up with the many ornaments, trinkets, and baubles that hung from anything and everything in conceivable view. If the smells from the edge of the village were so sickly sweet, then here in the center, they were nearly overpowering. The many lights and their reflections in everything surrounding threatened sensory overload in just moments.

Then, at the center of it all, was the largest tree Vaera had ever seen; decorated, at least. She gazed in wonder, her mouth slightly agape, up at the marvelous beacon of holiday cheer. A brief giggle escaped her without her consent, and then her eyes found the gemstone the other two were discussing.

"Oh my god!" She gasped aloud. "How do you think they get it up there?" It was quite obvious from the way her head shook up and down that she was picturing just how the elves were going to get the gem to the top of the tree. She couldn't wait to see the answer!
