Upon leaving Hoshi, Max would find himself on the long trek back to Kumo. Despite his love for the village, its own unwillingness to do what needs done and its allowing the evil of Mortarion to corrupt everything it touches tainted that relationship.
Despite his title and rank in Kumo, Max was a pawn of the village no more... He was returning to purge the unclean and rule over what remained. Failure in this task simply wasn't an option.
He was going to be Raikage.
