Hanten was a young academy student in Kumogakure. He was, of course, not the best student in the academy. With his skill and intellect, he very well could be, being generally smarter than your average (or even above-average) academy student in that village. But he was a student of nightmares, being highly unmotivated. But the worst thing of all was that he was a "good loser". It wasn't just that he was OK with losing, that he was a good sport. It was much worse. He loved to lose. It reinforced the fact that he was not only above others, but it also meant that he could show restraint in beating them down. Whenever he let someone beat him up, he always did it with a smile on his face.
Then again, that didn't mean anything much, because he did everything with a smile. A smile that hid himself; a smile that deceived and charmed at the same time. It was effective, but sometimes people didn't appreciate it. It seemed unsettling to them, and creepy. Sometimes, Hanten did it just to creep them out anyway, as it was fun annoying people so. He got up and put on his usual outfit of the black uniform with the four pale buttons. He smiled in the mirror (he was always smiling anyway), and walked out of his apartment. As he walked down the stairs, he noticed music playing. Of course, it was the landlady, playing away on the piano like she always did at this hour of the morning. "Good morning, landlady-san. I'm going out for a bit."
"Oh, very well Shiranui-kun, no need to tell me that." She thought he was a charming, good little boy, always getting up on time and going to his lessons, but she didn't know the ugly soul that was hidden beneath his smiling, cheerful visage. Well, you could call her naive or oblivious, but Hanten did a good job of hiding his true personality. He had completely covered it up after his parents' death, which was probably his Freudian defense mechanisms going into effect to protect his ego. But even after he had emotionally recovered, he found this false personality to be very convenient for his own purposes. After all, those false impressions that people had in meeting him would be mighty useful socially later on. If people saw him as a happy boy, so much the better for him.
He headed out to the training grounds, and found no one there. It was pretty chilly, being winter in the land of the clouds. The geography of this place made is pretty cold, and Hanten shivered slightly. His uniform wasn't very thick, but it didn't matter. He strode into the training grounds, smiling like it was nothing. "Ah, what a day." He started by running in place a little bit, to warm himself up. Whew! This was bracing indeed for a young boy like him. He wasn't the most bulky and buffed-up of young academy students, so he needed to train harder to get to the same goal that more physically gifted people did. He hopped up, and did some push-ups. With his constitution, he didn't have the stamina to keep going for long. He soon stopped, and flexed his aching muscles. "Whoo, I think I'm almost done for today. Why don't we do something else instead?" He spoke this to thing air, being somewhat pleased (at least outwardly). He walked home, and took a run up the stairs. How pleasant, he could get up and down the stairs much faster now. He went up to his room, sunk into bed, and took a smiling nap.
