Kino's [Flashback] Exams

Kino had awoken, sleeping in his wooden bed. His father had him sleep on a wooden bed since he had first moved to Sunagakure, he had said it helped toughen up people, rather than sleeping on a nice, comfortable, soft bed, they would sleep on a few wooden planks, nailed together. Thankfully there were no nails that could stab or pierce through Kino as he had laid down on the bed. He would stretch up, usually his father would come in five minutes after Kino awakens and tells him what's on that day's schedule, though this was a strange day, and his father had come in right as he stood up.

"Time for the genin exams, Kino." He had said, notifying Kino that it was time to rank up, and become a ranking shinobi. Kino hadn't attended the academy, instead he was 'home schooled' by his father, and he had recently, apparently, arranged for Kino to enter the genin exams.

"Alright.." Kino would say, he was half assed about this. He never truly wanted to become a shinobi, however past events had led him to become one. Like the time when he had been captured by enemies of his mother's Jounin squad.


Kino advanced, getting dressed and going to the academy, where he would be taking the exams. The weather was nice out that day, he figured today would indeed be a good day to pass the exams, with all the extra training he had put into his life, he was sure he would pass.

The grungy proctor of the genin exams sat in the teacher's chair waiting for one more student or two. In his mouth he had a big cigar that glowed every once in while as he smoked. The whole classroom was filled with the sweet smoke and it made a few of the would be genin cough here and there. Frankly the proctor did not care he was retiring in a day or two and this would be his last genin exam in his a career. He then planned on moving out of the sandy pit of a village and maybe living on an island for a while-that would be nice. When proctor saw one of the last students come in he stood up and read over the list that he had been given. From behind his cigar the proctor spoke up: "Kinominki Uchiha, you are up. Perform the three most basic jutsu we have been learning in class." Finishing his announcement the proctor sat down and took a long drag on his cigar as he waited for the one known as Kino to show that he was worth his salt as a ninja. Mean while he also wondered why this list was not alphabetized.

Kino walked into the room where a bunch of other academy students. Apparently this wasn't as private as he thought it would be. Kino sighed, even though there were only a few people here, he was about an hour early, he knew more would come. Rather than doing the chores his father had asked him to do before heading off to the genin exams he went thee first, and would pick up what his father had asked him to afterwards, so that he could get it there more quickly. He sighed, looking around at the grins of those a few years younger than him. He was being judged, something Kino didn't like to be. He could hear the whispers, the curious voices, asking why there was someone as old as Kino was at the genin exams. They were making fun of him, just beneath their voices, he could feel it.


He sighed, not wanting to hear the voices. "Heh." He heard, it had been a while since he's heard this voice. "Yo," he would say, "Takishino." It was what the voice inside his head preferred to be called, it was his name, in a way. "Been a while, hasn't it? Why haven't you been talking too much?" Kino asked, only in his head. Whenever he had conversations with the voices in his head it was only thoughts that Kino would have to send to them to talk to them, he didn't need to speak out loud. "Just been observing." He would reply. "We should meet again, perhaps spar even. It's been a while since we've done that." He said, Kino and this specific voice have sparred before, though Kino can't feel pain in his mind, and the voices don't die. Though he could find a treatment for the voices, get rid of them, but they've never done him wrong, always led with helpful advice, and told him what to do in time of confusion. "Sure, sometime after I finish the exams perhaps." He would reply to the request for a spar. The way Kino and the voices sparred was in dreams, sleep, the voice would take form, and be capable of fighting, though none of it hurts Kino or the voice.



He waited, the voice decided to leave Kino alone until after the exams, though secretly Kino had wanted someone to talk to, so that he could drain out the voices of the small children who Kino could only assume are making fun of him. He sighed, as the door slid open to the side. Kino lifted his head up, there was a man smoking as he walked in. Perfect place to do so. Seems the exams were about to begin. He sat up, bending his back only slightly, letting it snap. He looked at the man, as he called up Kino, and mentioned the fact that they've been learning the techniques in class, though Kino hasn't, whether the man would notice was of no concern to Kino at the moment, he needed to focus on performing the three basic techniques, as his father told him to do before leaving for the graduation to be successful, fail to perform the techniques and he'd fail the exams, not being able to become a genin any time soon, he would have to wait a few more months, and wait as a simple citizen.


He walked up, standing before the entire room, in front of everyone. There was a silence, for a brief moment Kino forgot, due to the pressure he was putting on himself, then the voices would remind him. He performed the hand signs series for the first technique, he moved his hands rapidly, putting them together forming a few hand signs, he held the final hand sign, at the same instant a small cloud of smoke appeared next to Kino. As the smoke cleared, an intangible form would appear, in the exact shape of Kino holding the hand sign. The clone had been perfect, every last detail, perfect. He had the same skin color, hair color, eye color. He was the same height, and even had the same clothing as Kino. He sighed, the clone would disappear, he had performed on of the three techniques.


After performing a single technique, he needed to perform two more, which to do though? He wondered, then decided. He would begin to perform a few hand signs, smoke filled where Kino was, covering him up, hiding him. He was out of view, as soon as the smoke cleared, all that could be seen as a simple log, standing on up. The flat bottom of the log was on the floor, the other, more rough side was on top. Though which technique did he perform, he hoped most would wonder. Smoke filled the exact same spot, covering the log. The cloud had been the exact same size as the last cloud. The smoke cleared, Kino was there. "Transformation technique, done." He said, notifying the sensei so that he wouldn't get in trouble when he performed the substitution technique as his next one. He performed his hand signs, one last time, a cloud of smoke filling the area around him, and he had swapped places with a simple pencil, the students would look around and see Kino in his seat. He would walk down, and take his head band, he had become a shinobi.
