Yurei

Mission:

Snow swirled around him. The icy winds of the country danced around Yurei and drowned out any other sounds in howling cacophonies. It was bitterly cold, nothing like the light snow he’d been dealt with in Forest Country, but tolerable. The gray sky and white earth seemed to mute the colors around him. It was as if he’d been deafened, and now he was going blind. There was something about this place - this country. It was cold in a different sense than merely the air. He couldn’t place it. Maybe it was the lifelessness. Maybe it was something else. He felt not like prey, but as if he were being watched in a country without eyes.

Yurei extended his hand, a snowflake torn from its breeze made its way into his palm. He stared at it, holding it just out from his waist. His fingers folded, his hand closed, and it was gone. He was clothed - a black wrapping covering his forearm and knuckles over darker gloves. Beneath his kimono he wore layers of fabric, and, beneath his mask, cloths that covered all but his eyes. His usual mane of white, spiked hair lay trapped beneath a black fabric that channeled it beneath his garments. His hannya mask rested on his face, strapped from the back and mounted. His hot breath poured from the mask’s nostril and gaping mouth, as if the beast it represented billowed fire and smoke.

He lowered his hand, glancing up at the lights ahead. Just before him was a beam not waist high that glowed, then faded a soft yellow hue at its peak. It pulsed like a heart, flashing and fading. With the sun hidden behind the blizzard’s clouds and snow, it was the brightest light in view. Yurei brushed the snow from the top of the lantern, then fixed his gaze beyond it. Not twenty yards from him was another lantern, beating in the same pattern. In Snow Country’s tundra, this was the only indication of a path set before travelers. It marked the surveyed land within the tundra, and, beyond it, its outskirts.

There was little to see in Snow Country as far as Yurei knew. It was a barren wasteland of ice and snow, known more for its lack of notoriety than anything denoting it. As far as he was concerned, it was the perfect location for these thieves to hide. No one without cause or with sense came here as the gains were so little if at all. And yet he and Damon had come without second thought on account of an interrogatee on the brink of death, though he did not yet know it. When hunted and marked as traitors, there were few instances of Missing Ninja positing the same goals Yurei and Damon had. In that end, the Uchiha had found solace in the little people, not those under the supposedly watchful eye of the Five Kage and their shinobi. It was only by pure coincidence that those they pursued now could also threaten those within countries under such supervision.

“Few visitors though Snow has, I doubt these shinobi will be on the same path as merchants and vagabonds,” Yurei said, looking out beyond the markers. The man Damon had sourced this information from offered little, but there were few places to hide in snow. The only asset to that end was the weather. “They’ll likely have an outpost nearby. Anything too far off this path would be a death wish, and anything underground would be readily covered by snow.” Yurei’s clawed hands reached behind him, pulling a hood over his horned mask. Two tears in its stitched frame draped over and around the horns, fixing it just over the mask’s exaggerated brow. “Let’s move.”

Damon

The trek had largely been uneventful. The greens and browns of forest country had been replaced by an all encompassing white and the sky seemed to adopt a gray hue in order to better suit the prevailing mood that seemed to accompany the two missing nin. The path of the frigid wind seemed to split along the pointed nose of the red tengu mask which adorned Damon’s face. The ex-jounin had opted to follow Yurei’s lead and don all black, save for the few red accents which still adorned his apparel and matched his mask quite nicely. His own hood was already pulled up over his head, the lining of which consisted of black feathers.

Snow Country was not his first choice for an expedition, the sheer white a stark contrast against both of their typical outfits which would make stealth harder against the snowbanks. Aside from hindering the very means they had used the forest trees for camouflage, the weather itself would be a danger no matter when one chose to visit for whatever reason, but the immediacy of the last raiding party caused the pair to be forced into this country in the midst of winter. The wind would indeed be cold regardless of the time of year, but it truly bit at the man, even through his attempt at protective clothing. “What do you mean?” Damon teased. “I’m sure they’ve come to Snow Country to create a safe haven for those seeking sanctuary. It’s such an inviting land,” he added sardonically. This observation might not have been the most in line with his typical demeanor, but quite frankly, he did not care much for the freezing cold to which they were presently exposed.

“Kind of strange for a base of operations to be this far out,” Damon thought aloud before Yurei continued. “Though, I guess it is one of the more disconnected lands from the major nations…” He let his words hang in the air as his voice wandered off into the endless white horizon. His gray eyes danced as they scanned the similarly colored sky as Yurei continued speaking. Move where? was the thought that first sprung to mind. Neither had spotted the base just yet and it had occurred to Damon on the voyage over to Snow that he could have pressed the raiding party for more information. Alas, here we were. “An underground hideout would still be possible, so long as there was a strong enough barrier to protect against the elements and prevent a cave in,” he added for the sake of consideration. It was never a good idea to remove something still possible from the equation when it came to the art of deduction. “In fact, a snowed over door would only help conceal them on the camouflage end. You wouldn’t be able to spot a steel hatch if it was hidden underneath a blanket of snow.” Gray eyes were overtaken by swirling red and three black tomoe adornments, his sharingan scanning the horizon for any possible details he could miss.

In the distance towards their right was a slight mound of snow, perhaps white snow accumulated atop one of several hills in the area. Yet, there was a small and barely noticeable light source, faintly coming out from one such side. “Do you see that?” Damon called out to Yurei, pointing in their northeastern direction. “I’m going to go check it out.” Regardless of whether or not the albino did, the darker haired of the two would begin to make his way through the snowdrifts towards one of the hills off in the horizon. The grievous glacial gale grew even more gelid as he approached the hill. For all he knew, it could have been a lone beam of sunlight that had reflected off of the snow into his eyes, but it was the only lead they had at the time. Assuming Yurei followed him, the pair would come across a small indentation in the hillside upon arrival. It offered a slight shelter from the elements, but the more interesting aspect of this respite were the bits of frost adorning a rustic door. Damon tried for the handle and found it locked, to no surprise. Hand still grasping the doorknob, he would look back towards his companion with an expectant look and a silent request for him to unlock it. Should Yurei get the memo and unlock the door from the other side, Damon would see a sconce bearing a torch, the source of the faint light he had spotted, above a staircase leading down into the depths. Another silent look to the Oni would carry with it the sense of ‘I told you so’, as he would silently descend into darkness and impart wisdom upon Yurei, after being right about not being so quick to dismiss secret underground bunker locations.

Yurei

Yurei’s mask gave out something that sounded like a muffled snort. Snow country was as inhospitable as you could get, rivaling that of Volcano Country. Though the danger wasn’t as immediate, to the untrained, Snow could easily kill. Although, in spite of such fierce conditions, the albino had begun to muse to himself. Such a place had so few travelers, it was no wonder the group they hunted now had a base of operations here. There was little opportunity for someone to find them - without cause Damon and Yurei likely never would have - and, more importantly, the naturally uninviting climate acted as a sort of embedded defense mechanism.

Lands with such harsh conditions made for strong people. Struggling to live from day to day, training in the harsh cold, enduring all of this for a mere meal - Snow had the capacity to make life grueling - let alone that of a shinobi. And yet, Hoshigakure, fittingly sourced in Haven country, was just that - for most. That he and Damon were forced to grow up in such a shut away village was an unfortunate miracle in a sense. But here, in Snow, the conditions alone could breed a far more stalwart shinobi. Perhaps dozens. Hundreds. And yet, Yurei saw people thriving before him. Protected.

Damon continued, bringing up yet another point in the country’s favor. The geological separation from the mainland of the shinobi world was another of its natural defenses, even if in close proximity to Haven in technicality. Much like Kirigakure, the waters surrounding the isolated country were both a sanctuary and a prison - two factors that may facilitate Yurei’s ends in time. Combined with the low traffic the country maintained, Snow would make for an excellent base of operations once they’d traveled the world to Yurei’s content.

But that was neither here nor there. That time would come. Yurei spoke up, shaking his head as his skeletal fingers rose to what would have been his lips. “No, it makes perfect sense. Shinobi aren’t easily concealed in plain sight. It’s best to let the environment do the work for you.”

Yurei’s eyebrow raised beneath his mask, turning to look at Damon as he continued. What he said was true, in a general sense, and, with the difference this group displayed from what the pair was usually fighting, it seemed likely, even. He nodded, allowing Damon to continue with his conjecture before following his eyes. It was there, outside the visibility of those without doujutsu, but, with the Sharingan, Yurei could see it with utmost clarity - a small mound of snow and a small source of flickering, dwindling light.

The door was nearly sealed from the ice, but Yurei could hear the wind’s echo inside. Wherever it led to, the other end was far from close. He took his queue, slipping past the door as if it wasn’t there to begin with. Pausing, he looked at the descending stairs, a lightsource palely tracing its end. He opened the door, allowing Damon in while suppressing the urge to let him freeze outside. As Damon entered, Yurei refused to look at him directly.

Shutting the door behind them, the steady howls of wind dwindled, but not completely. The staircase seemed to distort the storm’s cries. It felt unnatural. He stopped at the stair’s peak, glancing at the torch at their side. “Leave it,” Yurei said, once again activating his sharingan as he ventured into the bunker’s depths.

Each step echoed alongside the wind, oversaturated with it to the point neither’s could be heard. As they descended, the sound of the wind strangely faded - warped. The constant drone of chilled air became a methodical hum, drumming rhythmically in a static, constant beat. Once the pair reached the base of the steps, Yurei’s eyes peeked through the cracked door, scanning with the Uchiha’s visual prowess. Guards were stationed, patrolling the grounds of the next room. From this angle, eight could be seen.

More interestingly, Yurei saw the source of the hum. The churning of mechanisms. Steam rolled out into the staircase, pouring around Yurei. A machine of some sort, though crude. Pistons of stone bobbed as if on water, rising and falling onto themselves. Chakra, pure and made manifest, coursed through it. The Uchiha squinted, raising his head. Just above him and Damon was a vent. He turned to face his brother, pointing upwards.

Yurei jumped, latching his fingers through the grate. He raised his legs, pinning himself in the space as to move his hands. A kunai spun between his fingers, dancing as it found its way through each bolt. The metal grate fell into Yurei’s hands, and, passing it to Damon, Yurei slipped through.

The crawlspace was even tighter, but not impossible to navigate. Assuming Damon accompanied him, the pair arrived at another opening bordering the next room, this one with a much better view. The stone’s source of chakra lay before Yurei’s eyes. Visible chakra, siphoned from twelve shinobi, all suspended by chain, and some seemingly from thin air. They appeared drained and sunken. Yurei narrowed his eyes. No, they were already dead. What little chakra remained in them was being siphoned away from corpses and into the mechanism before the pair.

It was revolting. An overwhelming sense of disgust and anger washed over Yurei - coldly. His voice was thin, venomous and icy, yet disconnected, apart from himself. “It’s a weapon,” he said. The chakra boiling within the machine found its destination within a cannon of some sort. Through Sharingan, it radiated energy, the combined chakra pool of twelve, perhaps more, shinobi housed within it. “This is bigger than I expected,” Yurei said. He glanced around, taking the chamber into full view.

Damon

“Well, speak for yourself.” To the line of concealment, Damon would respond with a light jab. “You would have your complexion to your advantage here.” With this solitary addition, the Tengu would have to repress the slight chill he felt whenever he watched a formerly corporeal form move through matter as though it did not exist. It should be expected, of course, from one named “ghost” as it were. Yet, no matter how many times he saw it, it still seemed slightly outside the realm of possibility for him to truly come to terms. Perhaps, if he himself were to develop a similar ability, he would grow more accustomed to walking through walls after gaining a more insightful understanding of the process. He was far too deep in thought to notice the lack of visual attention he was receiving from his partner in crime(?). Damon followed the slope down, leaving the torch behind like he had initially already done, only for Yurei to additionally tell him.

His red eyes never faded back to his normal gray, instead Damon kept himself on his toes for the event of anything going wrong, as had been the case for most of the pair’s life. The dark haired man peered towards the next room to see a machination he could not quite comprehend. He was unable to get as long a look, before he was prompted to accompany the one with powers of intangibility into a ventilation shaft, which was probably used in order to keep the base at a warm enough temperature for human survival. He watched as his friend removed a nearby access point and handed it to him. Damon set it down gently along the side of the hallway, hoping that the inherent darkness of the hallway would be enough to avoid discovery. He was unsure if the bolts would be able to be reused after having a kunai stuck through them, but it would not matter shortly down the road. With or without any assistance from Yurei, Damon would stoop and jump up, grabbing onto an outstretched hand, if one was offered, or the sides of the entrance and pulling himself into the nightmare of a claustrophobic.

Damon, fortunately, had no such fear. In fact, he honestly had very little left to fear at all. He had already lost all that was dear to him, save for the only other person in the world who truly understood him. His time in Kumogakure had been ill spent in the grand scheme of things, as instead of forming bonds with others, he had opted to mentally recuperate from the ordeal in Hoshigakure that stemmed from the death of Akio. He shook his head in a physical attempt to expel the thoughts. With his mind back on the task at hand, the man without fear was able to use his elbows and knees to crawl a short distance behind Yurei, careful to make as little, preferably zero, noise at all. His chakra sensory was metaphorically lit up like a Christmas tree, the presumed weapon below them giving off an intense aura. His scarlet eyes met with the unmoving cadavers being drained of all their life force.

His heart sank in his chest as his eyes swirled into an inky spiral pattern. “So many dead and all for the sake of a weapon.” He sighed with a general contempt for humanity itself. His earlier jesting seemed to pour out of him through the blood that dripped from his right eye to the floor below. “Whatever this is, it comes to an end,” he said coldly. In stark contrast to his tone, a roaring black fire sprung around the weapon itself, leaving the bodies of the deceased alone. These burning shadows ate away at the core of the chakra gathering machine, and spread along the lines leading to the cannon. Those in the room quickly scrambled in abject fear of the midnight flames, which caused enough of a distraction for Damon to knock the vent from its bearings and drop down to the floor below, using chakra to cushion his fall.

Should Yurei accompany him down, he would allow for him to handle half the guards, while he himself simply caused the black flames to spread and leap to the nearest four criminals. If Yurei did not accompany him on this initial drop, the dark fire would instead leap to all eight of the men inside the room, leaving only Damon and the victims unscathed. They screamed and thrashed in an effort to extinguish themselves, but the flames were unquenchable. The chakra gathering device would become consumed by fire, which ate away at the chakra inside of it as well. Once everyone else in the room was dead, the fire would begin to die down as Damon looked out upon the destruction before him.

Yurei

Damon sprang into action, erupting like the flames before him. Amaterasu. Yurei watched that anger flash in Damon. It expelled into every move, every roar of the flames. Fire sprung up from the machine, the equipment, and, it too, was consumed by the roaring black flames. Yurei gilded downward, following Damon. His cloak swirled around him as if delayed, catching the air, wrapping and coiling. His arms extended, and he flung himself forward, kicking the first of the many into the flames that now consumed the room.

The conflict was brief. The screams, the roar of flames, made for a deafening silence. Yurei watched Damon, squinting at his eyes, the red blood streaming from their use. It had been so long since he had seen Damon exert so much emotion. Perhaps longer for himself. That rage, that anger that burned in his brother, somehow warmed him.

Yurei’s eyes draped across the floor, finding a man crawling towards him. His clothes had been shredded from him to no avail. The black flames ate away at him still, unquenchable. His eyes pled for mercy - it was all he could do not to scream in agony as he fed his end. He reached upward, begging for the kunai at Yurei’s belt, for death. The Uchiha regarded him with an absent look, the face of the mask he wore receiving those eyes and obscuring his own.

Beneath that visage, they were not merciful. He walked on, placing his hand on Damon’s shoulder. “Let it burn,” he said simply, moving to collect those mounted to the machine.

The chakra linking them to the weapon was fading, and with each removed from their chamber, they died. There was no stopping that, not by any means. In a sense, they already were dead. Each faded, gone from this world one at a time until there were none left. Yurei turned to Damon, staring at him. He stood, observing his brother as those fires raged around them. But he said nothing, and he made his way to the stairs, away from this, to bury the bodies.

Damon

There was no need to linger on the scene before him. Whatever monstrosity had been under development before them would exist no more. His eyes had seen to that end. The fire continued to burn away what was left, to ensure that nothing of the machine’s design could be recovered by any who happened upon this room. His response to Yurei was a silent agreement, his hands balling into a fist as he turned his back on the newly dead who would become naught but ash from the flames. He had spared the victims, however, and now the time had come to bury them. The carefully controlled flames had not so much as licked those whose lives were unfairly stolen from them, all for the sake of some grand weapon that would never see the light of day, as it would instead be reduced to nothingness in the still burning darkness.

The pair gathered the deceased and brought them to the surface one by one. Small grave sites were dug up from beneath the snow, where the dozen casualties of a twisted ploy for power would find their final resting place. What remained was a series of earthen mounds with no gravemarkers, already growing white from the deftly falling snow. With this, the Uchiha would leave what little remained of this operation, accompanied by the vague notion that the organization might not have been wiped from the face of the earth just yet.
