Wandering Through the Rice Fields - Page 2 Empty Re: Wandering Through the Rice Fields

Thu Apr 08, 2021 10:53 pm
As Nobutoshi ate, he watched Yasahiro, preparing to move if he was signaled to.
“Something happened,” Nobutoshi thought as he noticed Yasahiro’s expression change. An instant later he heard Yasahiro call out. Nobutoshi was already on edge, so as soon as he heard the urgent voice he ducked down and put his arms over his head, feeling the blade scratch his right arm. He quickly moved out of the booth and took a step back, analyzing the situation. The patrons were panicking and practically stampeding to the door. Luckily for them the woman didn’t seem to have any interest in them.
“Damn, looks like there’s no chance of slipping out with the crowd now,” Nobutoshi thought as he watched the last of the patrons exit. Now the only people left in the room were Nobutoshi, Yasahiro and the mysterious woman.
She didn’t seem to be in any rush to attack them so Nobutoshi decided to use this brief pause to gather some information.
“Who are you,” Nobutoshi asked, although he already suspected the answer, “and why did you attack me?”
The woman gave a slightly crazy smile. “A clever boy like you should know exactly why I’m here, but I’ll tell you anyways. I’m here to kill you of course. The family whose boy you killed put a nice bounty on your head, dead or alive in fact.”
“Damn it she just exposed me,” Nobutoshi thought as he quickly glanced over to Yasahiro.  “I could either make a break for it now and try to leave this place as fast as possible, or I could try to explain myself to Yasahiro. Both options don’t look too good, but I don’t think I have any chance of getting past that blade without help.”
“First of all don’t make it seem like I murdered some innocent child,” Nobutoshi said to the woman, trying to act tough. “He was 18, the same as me, and he had been a childhood bully. Plus it wasn’t just some random murder, it was a religious sacrafise to the great god Jashin!” As he finished his sentence he pulled his necklace out from under his shirt.
“Yeah whatever,” the bounty hunter said indifferently. “I couldn’t care less about the details of your crime, I’m just here to kill you. And as for you lord Komekage, I suggest you leave. I have no reason to fight you.”
“Wait what did she say?” Nobutoshi thought, surprised. “Lord Komekage? Isn’t kage the term used for leaders of ninja villages? So does that mean this is a ninja village, and I was eating with the leader of it?”
“Anyways enough chit chat,” the woman said as she leveled her sword, “it’s time to die!” She then started charging forwards at Nobutoshi while screaming “Let’s see your stupid blood god protect you know!”
This was the last straw for Nobutoshi, he felt his blood start rushing and then a weird feeling in his eyes.
“How dare you insult lord Jashin!” He yelled angrily at the incoming enemy.
Then next Nobutoshi knew, the woman was standing there with her sword through his chest.
“Damn it, I lost my cool again,” Nobutoshi thought as he looked at the sword in his chest with annoyance.
“Ow this really hurts,” Nobutoshi said to the woman as she looked at him dumbfounded.
“How are you not dead, that should have pierced your heart?”
“Wait a minute, how am I not dead?” Nobutoshi thought as he looked at the blood spilling from his chest.
“Lord Jashin must have rewarded me for being such an obedient follower!” Nobutoshi cried out, elated. “Thank you for this gift oh great lord Jashin! I will take this unbeliever down in your name!” As he finished talking, Nobutoshi grabbed the sword and pulled it out of the chest, then out of the hands of the stunned bounty hunter.
“Now,” Nobutoshi said with a malicious grin, “it’s time for Jashin to receive his payments." Weaponless and now against a seemingly immortal opponent, the bounty hunter turned tail and fled, dashing out of the restaurant and into the streets.
“Oh no you don’t!” Nobutoshi cried out with glee, his new sword in his hand. Nobutoshi would then start to chase after the woman, waving his sword and yelling like the maniac he is.

Wandering Through the Rice Fields - Page 2 Empty Re: Wandering Through the Rice Fields

Thu Apr 15, 2021 11:24 pm
"Nobutoshi, wait" a once absent authority leaked into the Komekage's tone. "Let her go."

In a rare case of inaction and complete shock, the samurai had watched his erstwhile companion take a sword to the chest like it was nothing and even go so far as to then sling threats at his would-be assailant. Now, however, the Komekage's words would reach out across the room just before the crazed Nobutoshi exited the building. Having to account for a dead body in his streets—whether it be Nobutoshi or his assassin—did not sound like the most enjoyable experience in the world and would result in a lot of paperwork—everything seemed to require paperwork of some kind when one ran a village.

"She won't be back," he stood up sheathing his half-drawn blade. "And I can't have you running about my village blade drawn chasing a shadow."

With a few strides, and assuming Nobutoshi had not hurried out into the street, Yasahiro stood by his side.

"Put the sword away and then perhaps we should talk about what really brought you here."

Once more the samurai's hand found its way to his blade. Habit, it seemed, no longer played any part in his actions, however. Rather, his actions came from an abundance of caution. It wasn't every day that one witnessed one walk away from being stabbed and babbling about a blood god of some sort of another. No, it simply wouldn't do to let one's guard down around one who, naught more than five minutes ago, appeared exceptionally normal; strange how quickly one could change in the face of adversity.

Wandering Through the Rice Fields - Page 2 Empty Re: Wandering Through the Rice Fields

Just as Nobutoshi was about to give chase to the woman, he heard the authoritative voice of Yasahiro from behind him, instructing him to stop. Nobutoshi halted with his hand on the doorknob, thought for a moment, then turned around, leaning his new sword against the wall.
“Just calm down,” Nobutoshi thought to himself as he took deep breaths. “I need to calm down, and think of a plan.” As he slowly walked away from the sword and towards Yasahiro, Nobutoshi could feel the strange feeling in his eyes retract.
“What could that have been?” Nobutoshi wondered. “Wait a minute, wasn’t it said that the Chinoike clan had access to a powerful dojutsu called the Ketsuryugan? No way, why would that manifest in me?” But Nobutoshi put those thoughts out of his mind as Yasahiro started walking towards him. They met in the middle of the restaurant, next to the open kitchen.
“Well I’ve already told you most of it, but I’ll tell you again,” Nobutoshi said as he sat in one of the chairs.
“I was born in a small town in the land of Hot Water. My parents were followers of the blood god jashin, and they passed their faith onto me. The other people in the town thought we were weirdos, so I didn’t have any friends growing up. Most of the people left us alone, but there was one kid who bullied me to no end. As I grew older, I became more and more invested in my faith, going from the usual prayers done by my family to sacrificing my own blood, and then to sacrificing animals. One day when I was pouring through books on Jashin that my parents had, I found something that really piqued my interest. It was a ritual for human sacrifice. With my mind set on performing this ritual, I spent the next few months planning how I would pull it off. On the night of my 18th birthday my plan was ready to be put into action. I had chosen the bully that I told you about earlier as my target, so in the middle of the night, I kidnapped him and took him into the forest, where I had already set up everything for the sacrifice. I then performed it, I’m sure you don’t want me to go into too much detail here. Unfortunately I lost my cool while performing the sacrifice and accidentally started yelling. So with the people coming, I quickly finished the ritual then ran off into the forest, and walked for awhile, until I eventually found myself here.” Noubtoshi then stopped talking and watched Yasahiro closely. He had already noticed that Yasahiro’s hand was on his blade, but Nobutoshi couldn’t exactly blame him for that. Now that Nobutoshi had given Yasahiro his full story, he couldn’t do anything but wait and see what Yasahiro’s reaction would be.

Wandering Through the Rice Fields - Page 2 Empty Re: Wandering Through the Rice Fields

Silence.

Perhaps a few years ago Nobutoshi would have found himself on the wrong side of the Komekage's blade by now. However, the samurai's flight from the Land of Iron had long since tempered such tendencies towards a more immediate form of justice. After all, how could he condemn someone for the same crime he himself was guilty of?

"Nobutoshi," Yasahiro spoke slowly, turning each word over in his head before saying it. "I recommend you keep that to yourself in the future; it may not be taken as kindly by others."

He eased his hand off the hilt of his blade.

"And I trust you have no such ritualistic designs on any of Tanbogakure's citizens?"

The samurai's eyes narrowed as he waited for a response, and his body tensed in anticipation. To cut a murder's life short precluded any and all chance of redemption, not an idea that the man found particularly appealing. If the Komekage had a shot at redemption then surely Nobutoshi should be afforded the same chance—unless, of course, he made the unfortunate choice to sate his bloodlust with the innocent and undeserving. Then, well, he would quickly find death to be preferable.

Wandering Through the Rice Fields - Page 2 Empty Re: Wandering Through the Rice Fields

Nobutoshi sat in silence as he watched Yasahiro process the story. It was an agonizing few seconds, not knowing if he could end up with another blade through him at any moment. But at long last, he was able to breathe when Yasahiro spoke. Nobutoshi nodded at the man’s words, remaining silent. It wasn’t like he wanted to tell his past to anybody. He had only told Yasahiro because he had no other choice. With relief, Nobutoshi watched the Komekage’s grip on his sword lessen, signaling that Nobutoshi was safe for now.
“I can assure you I have no intentions of sacrificing any innocent citizens of this village,” Nobutoshi told Yasahiro. “I am grateful to you, it would be extremely rude to do anything that would harm you or your village. On that note, if you ever need anything I would be obliged to help you.” As he finished, Nobutoshi glanced down and noticed that there was still a stab wound in his chest.
“I need to get this cleaned up,” Nobutoshi noted. He had nothing else to say, but didn’t want to leave without some indication from Yasahiro. He needed to tread very lightly if he wanted to avoid punishment.
“But what next? Assuming I’m even allowed to remain here in Tanbogakure is it really a good idea to stay? It might me best to try to start again in another village, though the bounty hunter could find and capture me there. The fact that this is a ninja village and that I know the kage puts me in a relatively safe position. Though my relationship with Yasahiro is nowhere near rock solid now. But still, for the time being I’ll have to stay for a bit. Once I make a bit of money and the bounty hunter shit has blown over I can leave and find somewhere else to go.” Set on this plan of action, Nobutoshi waited to see if Yasahiro had anything else he wanted to say.

"I may have a few things that you could help with," the Komekage's voice remained steady. "For now, however, you should find an inn and get yourself cleaned up."

Blood stained the ground around where Nobutoshi had been stabbed, and somewhere in the back room, he could just make out the shuffling of nervous feet—there wouldn't be any way to get around the paperwork now. That said, by some blessing, no one had lost their lives in the incident, so there was some silver lining to be seen. Nonetheless, the samurai had his work cut out for him and, for some reason, he doubted he wouldn't be getting back to his bed before long after dark.

"Go down the street and take a right," he continued. "The inn will be hard to miss. Tell the innkeeper that Yasahiro Yagami sent you, and they'll make sure you are well accommodated."

Taking a breath, he turned and took the first steps towards the back room—he'd have to smooth this whole thing over with the waitstaff.

"Oh," he called over his shoulder. "Also, try not to get stabbed again."

And with that, the Komekage disappeared into the back room.

Nobutoshi nodded as Yasahiro spoke, listening calmly. It was definitely true that he needed to freshen up a bit.
“I wonder what Yasahiro could need my help with,” Nobutoshi thought to himself. “But I meant what I said, whatever it is, I’ll do it. Well probably.” Nobutoshi was happy to help Yasahiro to an extent, but he wasn’t sure that he would go do something crazy that could get him killed. In any event, Nobutoshi listened to Yasahiro’s directions, making sure not to forget them.
“So Yasahiro has a lot of influence, that’s good to know. I suppose it makes sense though, what with him being the kage and all.”
Nobutoshi watched as Yasahrio turned and started for the back room, clearing going to talk with the restaurant owners. The encounter had certainly left its mark on the restaurant. Just as Nobutoshi thought Yasahiro was done with him, he saw him turn around.
“I’ll try my best,” Nobutoshi said with a small grin, before walking out of the restaurant and to the inn, where he could stitch himself up. As he walked along the street he got several strange looks, though he definitely couldn’t blame them. When he arrived at the inn, he dropped Yasahiro’s name and was immediately ushered to a nice room.
“Is there anything we can do about… that?” The bellhop asked as he pointed at Nobutoshi’s wound.
“Just bring me a needle and some thread. I can take care of it myself.”
The bellhop just swallowed and nodded, then turned around and left. Once he was gone, Nobutoshi walked into the bathroom and started to clean himself up until he heard a knock on the door. It was the bellhop back with the sewing supplies. Thanking him, Nobutoshi shut the door then walked back into the bathroom to begin the painstaking process of stitching himself up. While it hurt each time the needle pierced his skin, Nobutoshi savored the pain, enjoying the feeling. Once he was finished, he took a shower then changed out of his blood soaked clothes, settling down into bed for the night.
